Apple has recently released their new OS 10.6 - Snow Leopard. Whilst this is great news for mac users in that the system is faster and more reliable, they have substantially changed the way it interacts with third party programs. As such MacSpeech Dictate has run into a couple of compatibility issues.

For users of:

MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.2
MacSpeech Dictate Medical
MacSpeech Dictate Legal

Snow Leopard-compatible updates for MacSpeech Dictate 1.5, MacSpeech Dictate Medical and MacSpeech Dictate Legal are coming soon. Please read the information about the compatibility of Snow Leopard with MacSpeech Dictate 1.5, MacSpeech Dictate Medical and MacSpeech Dictate Legal in this announcement.

For users of:

MacSpeech Dictate 1.3.x

There are significant changes in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard that break basic functions inside MacSpeech Dictate 1.3. MacSpeech Dictate version 1.3.x is not supported to run on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or later.

For those who still want to launch version 1.3 -- unsupported, and functionality limited -- on Snow Leopard, a MacSpeech Dictate version 1.3.1 installer will unlock the combination of MacSpeech Dictate on Snow Leopard. For a version that will be tested and developed for compatibility with Snow Leopard, we encourage you to upgrade to MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.

Known Issues: (MacSpeech Dictate 1.3.1 with Snow Leopard)

We have done some basic testing with MacSpeech Dictate version 1.3.x on Snow Leopard so that we could provide you with a little bit of guidance regarding what works and what does not work. Please note that this is a partial list as there may be additional issues.

  1. Phrase Training: In the Recognition window, you are not safely able to edit any of the choices either by voice or keyboard. If you attempt to edit one of the choices in the list, MacSpeech Dictate will lose track of the application window where you are dictating. To reset dictation, you will need to close the recognition window, and then use the mouse to click into another application (sometimes you can switch applications by voice) and then click back into the application window where you were dictating.
  2. Commands: Some application-specific commands do not work. For example: in TextEdit, "Make Selection Bigger" does not work, even though "Make Selection Smaller" does function.
  3. Additional Issues: There may be additional issues. Limited testing has been done to determine what level of compatibility Snow Leopard has with MacSpeech Dictate 1.3.x.

Tested Compatibilities: (MacSpeech Dictate 1.3.x with Snow Leopard)

  1. In a few programs tested, dictation appears to work fine. Basic dictation was tested in: Microsoft Word 2008, TextEdit, Mail and MacSpeech Dictate's Note Pad.
  2. Existing Profiles can be used in Snow Leopard.
  3. New Profiles can be created in Snow Leopard.
  4. Some of the common Commands work just fine.
  5. A "Jump To" command for displaying a web page was created and successfully run.
